Washing machines are probably still churning away and runners are probably still finding splashes of mud today after the north saw a spate of trail races at the weekend. The change in seasons sees lots more muddy, hilly, steep, slippy, boggy and beautiful runs taking advantage of the countryside around Manchester and the north-west. Last weekend, startled sheep and cows witnessed runners take on the Rivington Trail Half Marathon. The route was varied underfoot and saw racers running up the cobbles to Rivington Pike, down to Rivington Barns and Rivington Green. There was even some road underfoot before runners ran downhill to the Angelzark Reservoir and then back up steep and lengthy climbs for the spectacular views of the moors which eased the pain a little.
On the same day, there was another trail running celebration which took place around Coniston. This event was the 7th year of this popular sell out set of trail races of various distances, covering magnificent mountain trails around the foothills of the Old Man of Coniston, and a 4km finish along the shores of the lake itself.
Finally, on Sunday, there was the popular Chester marathon, which was thankfully (for runner, supporters and wildlife alike) all on roads around the beautiful city of Chester. It is, in stark contrast to the trail races, a fast and flat course with over 70% of 2014 finishers achieving personal best times.
