Bike Fitting

Precision Bike Fitting to Enhance Performance & Reduce Injury

Our team at G4 provide a service for professional bike fitting to reduce the risk of injury and enhance cycling performance. Our precise and accurate measuring may entail bike set-ups that involve a range of small or large scale adjustments to allow a more comfortable and relaxing ride. The correct bike set-up will also assist with the correct weight distribution throughout the cycling phase to assist with speed, endurance and power efficiency.

Many people are seen at the clinic with neck, back and lower limb problems associated with overstraining and excessive tension whilst in the cycle position. Common problems associated with an improper cycle fit include the following:

  • Neck pain with or without neural irritation (arm pain, numbness and pins & needles)
  • Shoulder pain – e.g. Impingement Syndrome
  • Low back pain – e.g. Slipped Disc
  • Sciatica
  • Hip pain
  • Buttock pain
  • ITB Syndrome
  • Knee pain – e.g. Patello-Femoral Joint Syndrome
  • Calf pain
  • Achilles Tendonitis

Poor posture and an incorrect bike set-up can therefore lead to symptoms hindering performance and training programmes. The dynamics and mechanical issues associated with cycling therefore prove critical when maximum performance and efficiency is the goal.

Seeking the expert knowledge of one of our team will allow muscle torque and power to be at its most effective whilst on the bike and reduce the risk of injury.

We welcome all levels of cyclists within all fitness categories from beginners, commuters and the elite.

There are many different types of bikes which require unique differences within their own set-up. Such bikes include road, time-trial and mountain bikes and each fit is tailored to the individual requirements of the rider.

Our bike fitting entails a full biomechanical assessment from a physiotherapy perspective looking at your physical anatomy (lower limbs, upper limbs & trunk). Muscle length and other soft tissue examinations will help identify any anatomical issue that may affect cycling performance and injury. Such findings will then be considered in the bike fit and advised upon further as required to help maximise your cycling efficiency, performance and comfort.

We will then place your bike on one of our turbo trainers and assess your position on the bike which will entail the following:

  • Cleat Positioning (cleat fore/aft & rotational adjustments)
  • Saddle Position (saddle type, fore/aft, height & tilt adjustments)
  • Handlebar Position (torso angle, open shoulder angle, brake lever position & bar shape)
