Over the course of the last few years, Amy Forshaw (Professional Triathlete) has excelled at her favourite sporting disciplines – swimming, cycling and running. Our Didsbury (Manchester) team, have been very fortunate to have been involved with her success and training phases with a strong physiotherapy, massage and rehabilitation input.
Maintaining an athlete in their peak condition is essential prior to races and the added increase in stimulation of the nervous system and overtraining that takes place ultimately plays a part in disrupting the important cycle of training and racing for an athlete.
The correct exercise guidance regarding specificity, volume, intensity and overload is essential for maximising performance on the day of the race. Nutrition and the important therapeutic effects of regular massage and other treatments also play an important role in performance optimisation.
Our G4 team have been involved with Amy’s ventures all over the globe and have been supporting her right up until she kicks off in the water. Regular spinal manipulation and manual therapy have been a part of treatment that has taken place on many occasions. Such treatment has been directed to all spinal levels from the cervical spine down to the lumbar region in an attempt to increase spinal joint range of movement as required. The therapeutic value of this has assisted to maximise the required movement at various spinal levels allowing a more fluent glide with swimming, a more energy efficient motion with cycling and reducing the load required from the gluteal muscles within each discipline. Acupuncture, Trigger Point Therapy, Myofascial Release and Massage Therapy have all played their part in releasing soft tissue muscle tightness, relaxing tired and overactive muscles, minimising lactic acid accumulation and enhancing the recovery process between training and competitive events.
Our justification and clinical reasoning behind each treatment modality, has proven effective within Amy’s training. The key to the effectiveness of our skills has been the specific intensity, frequency, duration and time of such modalities performed by our team.
We look forward to working with Amy and other dedicated athletes and would like to wish them all the very best with the current training programmes and forthcoming races…
