MAGNESIUM
WHY HAS MY THERAPIST RECOMMENDED MAGNESIUM SUPPLEMENTATION?
Magnesium is not often heard of as an important nutrient for health over others such as Iron, Calcium and Vitamin D. It is however used in more than 300 enzymes responsible for processes such as ATP energy production, blood glucose regulation, heart muscle activation, efficient bowel function and blood vessel and muscular relaxation.
It is thought our diets should consist of a 1:1 ratio of Calcium to Magnesium, but there seems to be a dominance of Calcium in the typical modern diet with a ratio of 3.5:1 instead. The individual should aim to include the following foods regularly within the diet, to ensure this ratio of Magnesium to Calcium is more equally balanced:
- Seaweed
- Almonds
- Pumpkin seeds
- Whey
- Flaxseed
- Coriander spice
- Green leafy veg
- Wholegrains
HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM MAGNESIUM DEFICIENT?
There is no accurate laboratory test to determine your levels of Magnesium, as only minor amounts are distributed in your blood making a blood test unreliable. Detecting these symptoms of ongoing deficiency early may be a way to prevent further concerns. Such symptoms to take note of are:
- Muscle cramps and spasms
- Numbness and tingling
- Loss of appetite
- Fatigue and weakness
- Abnormal heart rhythms
SHOULD I SUPPLEMENT OR IS IT ENOUGH TO GET IT FROM MY DIET?
If you are experiencing any of the symptoms above you may already be at a stage where your Magnesium levels are quite low. It may take some time to build up just through diet and depending on how good your digestion and absorption is, you may find a supplement is the quickest way to resolve your symptoms – once corrected this can then be maintained through the diet. Magnesium Glycinate is the most bioavailable form currently and is a chelated form that is recommended for supplementation.
