The foot extensor tendons are located on the top of the foot and the flexor tendons are located underneath the foot. Both sets of tendons are commonly associated with overuse from activities such as running and hill walking. Pain and inflammation are the common symptoms associated with the injuries.

Causes: Sports which entail a lot of jumping and running or activities such as hill walking may place excessive stress on the extensor tendons of the foot which may lead to inflammation of the tendons (tendinopathy). Biomechanical implications, inadequate or incorrect footwear and tight fitting shoes may also contribute to the injury.

Symptoms & Diagnosis: Inflammation of the extensor tendons will cause pain and swelling on the top of the foot. Such symptoms are aggravated with running and other high level activity. Inflammation of the flexor tendons will cause pain on the underside of the foot.

Management: A skilled physiotherapist will diagnose the problem and provide physiotherapy and the correct advice to aid the recovery of the problem. A biomechanical assessment and subsequent intervention may be indicated to exclude lower limb function problems that may have contributed to the onset of the problem.
