Wrist and hand tendon injuries are common in many sports. Common types of injuries include De Quervain’s Syndrome which produces pain and inflammation of specific tendons on the lateral side of the wrist. The two tendons affected are the tendons of the extensor pollicis brevis and abductor pollicis longus muscles.
Causes: The tendon sheath may become inflamed due to repetitive strain injuries. The onset is normally caused by overuse and can occur in various activities such as gardening or in sports such as badminton, tennis, golf and rowing. The tendon sheath becomes inflamed and exhibits pain, soreness and can restrict movement.
Symptoms & Diagnosis: Pain is normally present on the lateral side of the wrist joint and the lower forearm. The wrist will feel sore and may restrict range of movement.
Management: Early physiotherapy is recommended to control the symptoms and help reduce the pain and inflammation. A splint may be recommended during the early stages of the injury.
