This weekend sees two events that, unusually, allow competitors a lie in if they wish to take part.
On Saturday, there is the Ullswater standard distance Triathlon, which takes place on Saturday afternoon in the Lake District. The race includes a chilly, but beautiful, 1.5 km swim in Ullswater, and undulating (“undulating flat as possible in this area” the organisers say, which may be a euphemism for hilly) 40 km bike via Askham and Lowther, before a final flat 10 km around Pooley Bridge.
On Sunday, there is the local Manchester Triathlon Club’s own Boundary Breeze sprint distance triathlon, which takes place at Boundary Water Park. It is a well organised and established event and an old favourite amongst seasoned triathletes, as well as being great for first timers as it is very friendly. The race takes place in the scenic Cheshire countryside just outside Holmes Chapel and Knutsford. The first wave is at 10am which again means a reasonably civilised start time. As well as the start time not being too much of a shock, the water in Boundary Park is the warmest at this time of year, with some choosing to swim without wetsuits. So in theory, the only thing that should take your breath away is the scenery.
