Issues with weight can stem from many different issues. Poor blood sugar management, thyroid issues and peri-menopause (or often a combination of all 3) often play a role. It’s about connecting the dots and unravelling the issue. Attitude towards food can often play a role here as clients may know what they should be eating but are failing to do so for a number of potential reasons; many of which there are productive strategies that can assist.
There are 100’s of people going through The Christie hospital every day and the amount of guidance they’re given on nutrition is minimal and often very confusing. The aim of the consultation with cancer patients can range from ensuring they’re maintaining their weight all the way to implementing targeted supplementation protocols to improve the effectiveness and decrease the side effects of chemo and radiation therapies. This demographic is dramatically underserved.
Current research is connecting the dots between seemingly disparate conditions. Examples of these are thyroid conditions, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis and several IBS conditions. Clients are often surprised by how much better they feel my implementing simple dietary protocols.
Elimination diets, stool testing, emotional health are all areas that can be investigated to work towards resolution of symptoms. Often these chronic conditions have unidentified triggers or driving factors that can be traced back to the interaction food has with the digestive system. Research also suggests that conditions such as depression, thyroid conditions, auto-immune diseases and skin problems may all stem from issues with the gut.
Many client self-referrals have previously not made the improvement they’d expect. Underlying mechanisms (blood sugar management, menopause and thyroid conditions) often play a role here. Food education, meal planning, macronutrient targets and supplementation are also areas that are incorporated into plans. Resolving inflammation can also be a target in rehabilitation protocols. Undiagnosed problem foods can exacerbate inflammatory processes and continue to drive a condition. Uncovering these is part of a holistic strategy to optimising health. Targeted supplementation for muscle and joint health should also be employed.
This is another area that nutritional therapy provides assistance. There is very beneficial research which can help and provide guidance. These include metabolic therapies such as saunas and cryotherapy, meal timing, sleep practices as well as plant compounds found in specific foods.
Our therapists are able to order tests, interpret the results and incorporate the findings into the client’s protocol. The tests include but are not limited to:
- Vitamin & mineral profiles
- Full thyroid tests
- Hormone tests
- Stool tests
- Gastrointestinal health profiles
- Auto-immune tests
- Genetic tests
